China begins delivery of Z-10ME helicopters to Pakistan.

China has reportedly commenced the deliveries of Z-10ME attack helicopters to Pakistan, marking a significant cooperation between the two countries. The decision comes after Pakistan was unable to procure the Turkish-made T129 ATAK helicopters due to lack of clearance from Washington, as the T129 ATAK helicopter’s engines are American.

Initially, Pakistan had conducted tests on the Z-10ME helicopters and found them to be inferior compared to T129 ATAK helicopters. As a result Pakistan had initially rejected the Chinese option in favor of T129 ATAK helicopters. However, due to the American refusal to sell engines for T129 ATAK, and the ageing fleet of Bell AH-1 cobra attack helicopters that are nearing 40 years of service, Pakistan was compelled to reconsider its decision and ultimately place an order for the Chinese attack helicopters.

The Z-10ME is the latest version of the Z-10 attack helicopters. It’s development trace back to 1990s when China sought to develop it’s own attack Helicopter. While exact details of it’s development remains unclear, some sources suggest collaboration with the Russian Kamov helicopter design bureau, while others mention Eurocopter and Augusta.

The Z-10ME incorporates several improvements over it’s predecessors. Notably, it features a reduced infrared signature by raising the engine exhaust nozzle upwards. The helicopter is equipped with a more powerful WZ-9G engine, providing enhanced performance. Other upgrade includes improved inlet filtering, increased ammunition capacity, graphene armor panels, infrared jamming capabilities, and a news top mounted fire control radar for IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) interrogation.
