Turkish military tech contributes to lower peace scores globally: report.

Turkey has been one of the most active exporters of military technology in recent years, exporting drones to more than 20 countries and leading to lowered scores and rankings in the Global Peace Index, an annual report by the Australia-based think tank Institute for Economics and Peace.

Among Turkey’s export partners are Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Mali, Ethiopia, Somalia and Ukraine.

Globally, the number of states using drones increased by 50 percent since 2018, the institute found. In the same period, the number of non-state entities using drones more than doubled.

Mali, Somalia, Ethiopia and Ukraine rank in the bottom 10 of the peace index for ongoing domestic and international conflict. Turkey itself is ranked 154th out of 163 countries in this category, placing between Mali and Somalia. Syria, where Turkey is an active participant in the conflict, ranked 161st.

Turkey’s clients rank similarly low in the domains of militarisation, economic cost of conflicts, and societal safety and security. Its own ranks are 113th for militarisation, 132nd for the economic cost of violence, and 142nd for societal safety and security.

Turkey delivered 28 heavy weapons deals in 2022, 12 of which included armed drone exports.

The country “remains the least peaceful country in the region, and is the only European country ranked outside the top half of the index”, the institute found. Its overall score dropped by 1.7 percent in 2022, placing it 147th in the general ranking.

The drop in Turkey’s score stems from deaths from external conflict shooting up by 46.3 percent, and the incarceration rate in the country rising by 12.3 percent.

“This is the least peaceful Türkiye has been since the inception of the GPI in 2008,” the institute said.
