Finland, Nato allies monitor Russian air activity in the Finnish Gulf.

Several Russian planes flew over the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland this week, according to the UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF).

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) reported several Russian aircraft flying over the Gulf of Finland and the Northern Baltic Sea on Thursday and Friday.

According to British reports, the Finnish Air Force was involved in an identification flight on Friday.

Fighter jets from several Nato countries monitored the Russian aircraft, which included a reconnaissance plane, two transport planes, three fighter jets and a few bomber planes.

The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace, and at least some of them were en route to the Kaliningrad naval air base. The Russians had not issued advance notice of their movements in accordance with international norms governing flights in the region, according to RAF.

The Romanian and Portuguese fighter jets involved in monitoring the Russian aircraft are based out of Lithuania, while the British aircraft took off from Estonia.

Nato is responsible for the Baltic countries’ air defence, and the alliance is currently conducting a naval exercise in the Baltic Sea.

Helsingin Sanomat was the first to report the news.
