Bulgaria signs 9.5 mln euro fighter jet repair contract.

The Bulgarian defence ministry said on Friday it signed a contract worth 9.55 million euro ($10.5 million) with Polish company Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze Nr2 for the repair of six engines for MiG-29 fighter jets of the Bulgarian Air Force.

The engines will be repaired at the company’s base in Poland, the defence ministry said in a press release. The duration of the repair of each of the six engines will not exceed nine months from the date of handover.

The repair contract was awarded following a public procurement process and will ensure the airworthiness of the MiG-29 aircraft until the new F-16 Block 70 fighter planes enter combat duty, the ministry noted.

Bulgaria has ordered from the U.S. two batches of eight F-16 Lockheed Martin fighter aircraft each, expected to be delivered in 2025 and 2029, respectively, at the earliest. Until then, NATO member Bulgaria is taking steps to ensure the airworthiness of its ageing fleet of MiG-29s for their air policing role.
